Back to Main :: Community Impact   2002 COMPASS II What is 2002 COMPASS II? 2002 COMPASS II® is a collaborative needs-assessment system used by communities nation-wide to help identify their own community's strengths and areas of potential growth and development. All communities, like the individuals who live in them, need a direction in order to better themselves. As the old saying goes, "how will we know if we're there, if we don't know where we're going?" Building a stronger community is at the heart of 2002 COMPASS II. Spearheaded by United Way of the Tanana Valley, it required the participation of a diverse group of individuals, organizations and government agencies throughout the Fairbanks North Star Borough. The COMPASS system is grounded in these sound community-building principles: Build on the strengths of local individuals, associations and organizations. Focus on specific actions and measurable results to improve community life. Promote participation by people of all races, genders, ages and cultures. Ensure local decision-making and ownership. Draw upon the resources of the larger community. Bridge all sectors to develop healthy children, families and communities. Share experience and knowledge to promote continuous community learning.
