Community Forum Summary

On March 26, 2002, the United Way of the Tanana Valley sponsored a Community Forum at the Westmark Hotel from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. United Way's objective for the forum was to develop a list of solutions for five priority issues identified through the COMPASS II project from the Community Needs Assessment and the Community Visioning Session.

The priority issues are as follows:
• Affordable Medical/Dental Care
• Family Violence
• Infrastructure Planning
• Job & Career Opportunities and
• Substance Abuse.

The information compiled from the Community Visioning Session will assist COMPASS II committee members to develop a Community Action Plan.

Participants: There were 54 participants representing community members of the Fairbanks North Star Borough, 2 participated by fax or telephone. Of those that participated, 48 participants completed the survey. Information collected from the survey and U. S. Census data are as follows:

Highlights: Participants frequently recommended the following actions to address priority issues identified:
  • Affordable Medical/Dental Care : Explore reasons for higher cost, pool insurance plans, promote good health, expand professional pool and expand existing low cost programs. (68 responses)
  • Family Violence : Provide faith based support and counseling, expand family activities, prevent through public awareness, expand and improve existing programs and provide treatment options. (82 responses)
  • Infrastructure Planning : Develop an infrastructure plan to include community coordination, recreational activities, transportation, fiscal and land. (79 responses)
  • Job & Career Opportunities : Engage businesses, improve economy, establish job banks and expand job training, expand programs within the School District and University and enhance youth opportunities. (77 responses)
  • Substance Abuse : Expand activities, provide more education on substance abuse, improve law enforcement, create a local campaign for public awareness, increase and specify tax to address substance abuse and improve, expand, and enhance treatment. (101 responses)
