United Way’s Day Of Caring Volunteers Help Local Nonprofits
Fairbanks, AK (September 9, 2004)
United Way of the Tanana Valley has enlisted the help of over 1,400 corporate and community volunteers to complete 33 projects for Fairbanks area nonprofit agencies for its 8th annual Day of Caring, Friday, September 10, 2004. The projects range from construction projects and maintenance-type projects to drives for canned food, winter coats and clothing, and school supplies.
The projects completed for United Way’s Day of Caring are to pay tribute to the victims of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks and also serve as a reminder to Day of Caring volunteers of the tireless and heroic volunteer efforts of the workers at Ground Zero and across the nation during our nation’s tragedy. The community service projects normally happen on September 11, but this year the date fell on a Saturday.
Day of Caring gives an opportunity to company employees and community volunteers to assist nonprofit agencies who provide human care services throughout the community with mission-related projects and “wish list” projects they otherwise would not be able to complete. Volunteers donate their time and supply the labor, and the agencies provide the materials necessary to complete the projects.
Some of this year’s Day of Caring projects are:
- Food Boxes for the Commodity Supplement Food Program will be packed at the Food Bank;
- Fall Clean-up Project for Ft. Wainwright Child and Youth Services;
- Wooded lot to be cleared in North Pole for the Fairbanks Resource Agency for a park area for residents;
- Painting and oiling wood walls at the Girl Scouts office;
- Life skills classes will be taught at Presbyterian Hospitality House;
- Parent and grandparent volunteers will share parenting skills with staff at the Resource Center for Parents & Children;
- New family services office will be created for the Salvation Army;
- Construction project for Love, INC.’s new location;
- Camp Fire students will make snowflakes and write letters to U.S. Armed Services personnel to send for the holidays.
United Way of the Tanana Valley is a nonprofit agency that provides funding to 23 health and human care member agencies through community donations. United Way of the Tanana Valley is focused on building a better community.
