Community Visioning Session
Executive Summary
On January 19, 2002, the United Way of the Tanana Valley co-sponsored a Community Visioning Session at the Westmark Hotel from 8:30 AM to 12:30 PM. The University of Alaska Fairbanks, Department of Communication facilitated the session. United Way's objective for the session was to collect information for the COMPASS II project. The COMPASS II project is comprised of a Community Needs Assessment and a Community Action Plan. The information compiled from the Community Visioning Session will assist COMPASS II committee members to prioritize the critical community needs.
Participants: There were 146 participants representing community members of the Fairbanks North Star Borough. Of those that participated, 116 participants completed the survey. Information collected from the survey and U. S. Census data are as follows:

Task: The participants responded to the following questions:
- What would you like to preserve (keep) in our community, the FNSB?
- What would you like to improve (enhance/delete) in our community, the FNSB?
- What would you like to create (add) in our community, the FNSB?
Topics: The responses were grouped based on the topics listed in the COMPASS II Project as follows:
- Economy includes comments about businesses, employment, taxes and other
- Education includes comments about the University, School District and other
- Environment includes comments about the natural setting, beautification, preservation, air and water quality, recycling and other
- Health includes comments about health care, hospital and other
- Housing includes comments about facilities, homes and other
- Leisure includes comments about recreational and cultural activities, public use trails, arts, history and other
- Safety includes comments about public safety, emergency services, justice and other
- Social includes comments about cultural heritage, social services, communications, government relations and other
- Transportation includes comments about air, bus, vehicles, rail, roadways, traffic and other

Highlights: Participants responded frequently about the following items:
- Preserve: : Environment (open spaces and green belt), Social (sense of community) and Leisure (trails and winter recreational activities).
- Improve: Environment (Downtown area), Leisure (recreational activities for youth) and Social (improve communication with the Government).
- Create: Economy (build a stronger economy), Leisure (recreational activities) and Social (expand communication with the Government).
